The Lily of the Lake
Overlooking the tranquil waters of Lough Leane, colourful Killarney is a top Irish tourist destination. The UNESCO-listed Killarney National Park surrounds Muckross House, a stately home sitting in large grounds with a traditional farm.
A tree-lined lane leads to Muckross Abbey, a former Franciscan monastery whose cloisters enclose a tall yew tree. Celtic crosses line the cemetery and beyond is the lake, at the centre of which is a tree-lined outcrop, home of the historic Ross Castle. This 15th-century stone fortress once housed the O’Donoghue clan, one of whom reportedly lives at the bottom of the lough.
More legends envelop the Ring of Kerry – a scenic drive starting from Killarney and supposedly the last place to spot a leprechaun. Gushing Torc waterfall is just one of its fantastic sights.
In Killarney itself, horse-drawn carts roam narrow streets whose Irish pubs offer great nightlife. Impressive St Mary’s Cathedral has a towering spire and somewhat dark interior. The local gaelic football team play at Fitzgerald Stadium, and more sports can be enjoyed at Killarney riding stables and the nearby golf and fishing club. There is also a popular racecourse.
Accommodation in Killarney on Booking.com includes 5-star lakeside hotels, B&Bs near the train station and town centre guest houses. All with that trademark Irish hospitality.
We've come to Ireland six times in the past 24 years but...
We've come to Ireland six times in the past 24 years but this was our first visit to Killarney. Killarney is very low on our list of places we have been. It's too crowded and touristy for our taste and, quite frankly, the Americans there acted like jerks. (As an American, I can say that.) We stayed for two nights, but could have done with one. I wanted to go to see the Gap of Dunloe, but the major jaunting car company, Killarney Jaunting Cars, did not offer a tour unless you took their Gap of Dunloe adventure package at 115 euro a pop. It was also 115 euro to rent a jaunting car from a private driver which was too expensive. We couldn't even see Torc Waterfall because we couldn't find a place to park our car. It was ridiculous. What we did: a visit to Ross Castle and Muckross Abbey, plus a jaunting car/boat excursion in the Killarney National Forest could have been done in a day. We will not be returning to Killarney again.

So magical, sparkling clean, charming fairytale steets with shopping and pubs. Great food. Too much to see for our 1.5 day stay. Beats Disneyland! As reported from a late 1950s Orange County California native! Must find a way to come back to stay in Killarney and have the time to explore Ring of Kerry in full, Kenmare, spend time doing outdoor activities and enjoy the local horseback riding, boat rides, and so much more. What Ireland dreams are made from!!

Hotel beautiful perfect.
Hotel beautiful perfect. My wife who always traveled with me died earlier this year of MND Disease and I was visiting all the places we you to stay on our trips. As I have already said the parking ticket I got for parking in what I was led to believe was a disabled zone has put a very bad taste in my mouth. I would have to think seriously about visiting Killarney again.

There is so much to do in and around Killarney that your stay will not be long enough ! While some Hotels and Rental properties would seem to be somewhat expensive you can also find some which are really good value and of a good standard if you do the research !

We were very disappointed that the Killarney National Park visitor center and Ross Castle weren’t open and especially that there was no acknowledgement of that on their website. That was our main reason to visit Killarney. Understandable about due to weather, but the visitor center was due to renovations.

Place is nice and quiet.
Place is nice and quiet.
Holiday feeling as soon as we arrived.
Host was excellent.
Rooms- spotless.
Kitchen- all you need for self catering is there.
Town is nearby. Torc Waterfall and Mucross House are nearby.
Highly recommend the place 👌👌
Such a lovely hotel, rooms felt very luxurious including a jacuzzi bath. Staff were so nice and accommodating and the food was top notch. Ate dinner and breakfast both days we stayed here and wouldn’t have had it any other way. Good location too wasn’t noisy whatsoever compared to so some hotels that are right in the town centre, 5 minute taxi in and out of Killarney was grand! Free parking outside the hotel too so could leave the car there while you venture off. Would definitely recommend this place and would no doubt book it again!
This was our second stay at the Arbutus. The hotel is well located in the town centre, near the railway station. The public rooms are beautiful, traditional interiors in Georgian style, with elements of Celtic ornamentation. There are numerous examples of 'Killarney furniture' in the hotel, a distinctive form made of locally-growing arbutus wood with marquetry inlay. The hotel bar has the character of a tradtional Irish pub with some excellent decor, including an art deco fireplace. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly.
Lovely hotel perfect location, food was delicious well served well priced with plenty on the plate.
Nice relaxing hotel lounge was quiet but week day in February what would you expect.
The staff where nice and welcoming, and two min walk from town centre great hotel all and all and for 86e what a brilliant bargain .
I'll be staying again summer time I could only imagine the atmosphere that time of year.
I really enjoyed my stay thanks killarney Avenue, peaceful nice two day break away couldn't ask for better.
Beautiful hotel, right across the street from Muckross House and the ruins of an abbey and Killarney National Park. They had bikes for guest use and we used these to cycle around the park. The breakfast was the best we had during our stay in Ireland. The staff was very helpful and directed us to a store where we could find vacuum packing bags so we could better fit all the woolen things we bought and they even made a vacuum available to squash it all down super flat. A luxurious place to stay.
This was an amazing hotel with amazing people. They were all very kind to me, a first timer in Ireland. Breakfast was delicious. The location is absolutely perfect. It is close to downtown Killarney (3 minute walk, if you walk slow), but far enough that it was very quiet at night, even on St. Patrick's Day. On my last day, I asked the gentleman who owns it if I would need a taxi to get to my next hotel. I would have, but he drove me himself!!! Such a wonderful person.
We loved EVERYTHING about the property!!! By far my favorite hotel while is Ireland for 2 weeks and 5 hotels. The suites are luxurious, comfortable and amenities such as bedding and robes are 5 star!! The robes are amazing!!! Great location with parking on-site which made our day trips so easy to go get the car within steps of the front door. I'm still dreaming of this hotel, would highly recommend!!
Getting slightly used to very high prices in Ireland this hotel surprised me with price to value ratio, especially when I factor in their incredible breakfast
Breakfast included in price
Room was very comfortable and location good for a drive around the Ring of Kerry
Hidden gem - the place has the best restaurant in the area. Definitely a real dinner pleasure
This was the most beautiful and unique hotel we stayed in during our two weeks in Ireland. The attention to detail was unparalleled, such as fresh flowers throughout the lobby and beautiful decor. The pool was a hit with my son and the bar and breakfast rooms had easy, lovely meals. Staff were extremely friendly and attentive.
Fabulous hotel set in gorgeous grounds, with beautiful walks around the hotel and nearby. The room was spacious and comfortable and the breakfast had plenty of choice to suit all tastes and expectations. The staff were warm, polite, friendly and professional. A short walk to the town centre (15 mins stroll)
A real classy feel about this hotel. Located a few minutes walk from the town centre, great place to stay - would highly recommend.
Staff are excellent, front desk and bar/restaurant. great breakfast choices, and evening meals were delicious (so much so that, unusually, we ate in the hotel every night)

Lovely room, breakfast, and hosts! Only a few kms from town centre, so was in a nice quiet area but still convenient since we had a car. And minutes from Muckross House and various hiking trails.
breakfast was very good, good choice of food. Porridge was superb! Staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel is well located, short stroll to the town centre. Strongly recommend this hotel!
